The New Moon in Capricorn and the New Yea

December 31st ~ January 7th

Let our New Year’s resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. ~ Goran Persson

When we look back at 2021, the prevailing theme for the year was one of transition, as we stood on a threshold between the old and the new. As we are doing now at the threshold of 2022. We are still under the aegis of the Saturn/Uranus transits of 2021, so we are still in the process of transition. Yet, as we stand here daring to peek into the New Year, we cannot help but feel the stirrings of hope and possibility  even in the midst of change.

January was named for the Roman two-faced god of beginnings and endings. Portrayed with two faces, one face looks back on the year that just passed, while the other looks to the future. Portraits of Janus were often placed over the doorways and gates of Rome. He also presided over the New Year. And so also Father Time, portrayed with his scythe, is busy harvesting the wisdom and experience of the previous year, while clearing the field for the New Year’s seeds that are yet to be planted. Gathering the essence of the old year, we are preparing the way for the New Year to come. And so this season is ripe for our New Year’s resolutions.

And what better time to do so than with the New Moon in Capricorn on January 2nd? Capricorn is a sign of goals, of planning and growth. New Moons are times of new beginnings, a time to plant seeds that we wish to see cultivated and flourish. Capricorn is a sign of endurance, commitment and determination. Therefore what better time to sow intentions and resolutions that we wish to see last?

New Year’s Day occurs at the waning Balsamic Moon just before the New Moon on the 2nd. This is a time of clearing, releasing and purifying. And so we are reminded to clear the slate first. Clear out the cobwebs and clutter of our lives, and within our own minds, making room for better things to come. So rather than sowing your resolutions as we usually do on New Year’s Day, wait a day for the New Moon to give your resolutions strength and longevity. Make them positive, straightforward and clear. Just like the sign of Capricorn.

If we were to look at a theme for 2022, we might still see these lingering elements of change. The planet Uranus will be a key player as it is going to be highlighted by several of the upcoming eclipses now that they are going to be in Taurus and Scorpio. As a result there may even be a few surprises along the way. As a result this could prove to be something of a pivotal year.

One characteristic of the planet Uranus is that it can be illuminating. And it can open the door for better things to come. Therefore keep an open mind and be willing to look for solutions in unexpected corners. Simple changes in perspective could have remarkable consequences. By being open to new possibilities you can discover ideas and possibilities that you were not able to see before!

Perhaps a little more subtle, but terribly persuasive in its own way, will be the conjunction between Jupiter and Neptune in their own sign of Pisces in April. Jupiter only just re-entered Pisces on December 29th, where it will remain until May (for now), and meet up with Neptune on April 12th. Conjunctions sow seeds interlaced with the elements of each of the planets involved. And thereby can set the tone for months to come.

“Hope” is the thing with feathers ~ That perches in the soul ~ And sings the tune without the words ~ And never stops at all ~ Emily Dickenson

Jupiter conjunct Neptune in Pisces is a transit of Possibility. It will not be without its faults. Conjunctions contain the potential for the good and the bad, and everything in between. And it is likely that we will see all of it. But in the boundless sign of Pisces, the sign of dreams, almost anything is possible. It is a transit of inspiration, of artistic mastery, of spiritual insight. Where we can go south is through escapism and avoidance; getting caught up in unrealistic schemes and fantasies, and over-romanticizing our goals. Jupiter and Neptune in Pisces brings an abundance of water, literally as in floods, and personally through an abundance of emotions and feelings. It lends an element of impressionability and therefore can also confound us with deception, propaganda, and glamour. Jupiter/Neptune can lead us astray with false lights and mirages.

But if we were to take one thing away from the Jupiter/Neptune conjunction of 2022, it would be about living our ideals and our dreams with conviction, and not just in name only. This is about putting our ideals into some sort of practical application in our everyday lives. Jupiter/Neptune in Pisces is about realizing that we are all swimming together in this great cosmic ocean we call life, and that we are not alone. There are others struggling here with us, and together we can accomplish so much. And so we are all going to be asked to consider: How can you best support your beliefs and your spiritual path? and How can you bring yourself, your life, your actions and your decisions, more in alignment with your cherished ideals?
