On January 11th, we had a New Moon in Capricorn, giving us a little incentive and inspiration to organize our lives, set goals and fulfill some sort of vision for the future. Capricorn is a Saturn sign, and since March of 2023, Saturn has been in the Jupiter sign of Pisces. Pisces is a sign of vast possibility. It speaks to us in our dreams, and inspires us to wonder. Saturn and the sign of Capricorn, are pragmatic, realistic, and no-nonsense. And with Saturn in the sign of Pisces it could feel like we are being asked to hem in our dreams, or reconsider our big vision for the future.
And Saturn will seem to tell us what we cannot do, what is not achievable or realistic. But within the parameters of what is left, we also discover what we can do, what is possible. For Saturn does not tell us not to dream. What Saturn wants us to do is to figure out how we can make that dream a closer reality by being more practically realistic.
This month and next Saturn is sextile Jupiter, one of the ruling planets of the sign Pisces. And through this helpful connection between the planet of expansion and inspiration; and the planet of goals, self-discipline and achievement, we are being asked to create some sort of realistic and achievable plan for the future. Saturn brings the experience, and Jupiter brings the accumulated knowledge and wisdom.
With Jupiter in Taurus, our vision for the future is about creating greater stability and peace in our lives. It’s about figuring out sustainable financial plans and initiatives. Traditionally this combination is very good for business opportunities and planning, as we can see the larger picture, as well as the necessary details required for achieving that larger vision. There may still be a few twists and turns ahead (just wait for that Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in April!), but if we hold to our own convictions, and create a realistic and achievable plan right now, progress and success can be achieved.
Mars and Mercury in Capricorn are now asking us to create our own achievable road map for the future. And in the process we are asking ourselves what sorts of things we might want to implement right now, in order to avoid any problems later on. What needs to be organized? Where might you want to cut back or prioritize in order to make your life, your lifestyle, and your vision more achievable as well as sustainable?
But perhaps one of the biggest stories of the year, is Pluto’s ingress into the sign of Aquarius on the 20th of January. Pluto will briefly retrograde back to the last degree of Capricorn from September thru November, but for all intents and purposes we are watching the end of one era transition to another. Know also that change is not always welcome. And know that even after November, when Pluto is fully seated in the sign of Aquarius, the old guard from the Pluto in Capricorn era will still be holding on. But only barely.
Old habits die hard. Old regimes continue to vie for control Vestiges from bygone eras will continue to try to insinuate themselves into our lives, as they long for a past that we have long since outgrown. There can be fear with change: Fear of becoming irrelevant; Fear that all that we had worked so hard to create is subject to destruction; perhaps even fear of destruction of all that we knew. And so we desperately cling to what once was, and what we were familiar with.
And as we stand here at the very last degree of Capricorn, we stand on this threshold between one era and the next. And it can feel a little scary. And it can be hard to let go. Pluto can be a metaphor for death and destruction. But it is also a symbol for birth and renewal.
Over the past 15 years, what valuable lessons have I learned? What achievements have I contributed to? What have I helped to build?
What are we still holding on to that we no longer need, and is only holding us back, and preventing us from growing?
What traditions or outmoded ideas are no longer relevant to us as a whole?
What are those things in society that are no longer sustainable?
What are the traditions and customs that are worth saving, and help to further support and define our values?
How can I best share what I have learned with others? Or make it more meaningful?
On January 20th both the Sun and Pluto will enter Aquarius.
